The Role: Departmentalized ELA Instruction

As a Middle School Reading & Writing Teacher, you will focus exclusively on your craft. GLA utilizes a departmentalized model for grades 1-8, allowing you to teach specialized reading and writing courses to a specific grade level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Excellence: Internalize and deliver rigorous, engaging lesson plans designed for college readiness.
  • Data-Driven Growth: Use academic data to pivot instruction for whole-group and small-group settings.
  • Culture Building: Maintain a safe, structured classroom using GLA’s systems, routines, and “Be GREAT” virtues (Gratitude, Respect, Excellence, Accountability, and Truthfulness).
  • Professional Development: Engage in weekly 1:1 coaching and collaborative PD to constantly refine your practice.

Requirements and Compensation

Great Lakes Academy seeks growth-oriented individuals who believe in educational equity for Black and Brown students.

  • Salary: $58,834 – $91,661 a year
  • Type: Full-time, Charter School Setting
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Licensure: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: Urban public or charter school experience is a plus.
