Position Overview

  • Type: Full-time, Non-Union, Exempt (SG1)
  • Salary Range: $90,000 to $106,000 a year

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Computer Science Manager, the Content Specialist will focus on improving student experiences and outcomes aligned with the CPS Instructional Core Vision. Specialists are assigned to specific grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) to scale a coherent PreK-12 computer science framework.

Primary daily duties include:

  • Professional Development: Designing and facilitating impactful learning experiences for internal and external stakeholders, including Network Chiefs, school leaders, instructional coaches, and teacher leaders.
  • Curriculum Support: Leading unit-specific launch sessions and providing Professional Learning Community (PLC) materials to help educators successfully implement CPS Computer Science curricula.
  • Skyline Curriculum Development: Analyzing professional learning data, identifying implementation barriers, and participating in centralized feedback loops to continuously improve the district’s instructional resources.
  • Collaboration & Advocacy: Partnering with other STEM department specialists to establish consistent, district-wide instructional policies and guidelines.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required (focus in a relevant field preferred); Master’s degree preferred.
  • Licensure: Must hold at least one of the following teaching credentials issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE):
    • A valid Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate grade/content endorsement (Computer Science, LBS1, ESL, or Bilingual preferred).
    • A valid Career and Technical Education (CTE) Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) in a relevant content area (e.g., Computer Science or Computer Programming).
    • Note: Valid out-of-state reciprocal licenses are considered, provided ISBE licensure is secured within 6 months of hire.

Required Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional educational experience.
  • At least five (5) years of classroom teaching experience including computer science instruction (or three years of teaching combined with two years in a comparable content specialist role).
  • A minimum of three (3) years of teacher leadership experience (e.g., leading curriculum development, analyzing data).
  • A minimum of three (3) years working with adult learners, including designing and facilitating professional development programs.

Skills & Core Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of computer science pedagogical best practices.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to build consensus across diverse audiences (teachers, principals, and administrative teams).
  • Stellar organizational skills to manage multiple complex workflows simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with the Google Suite ecosystem.
